“Listening to
this record blindfold, one could think that one of Sonny
Rollins’ long lost masters has turned up from the sixties.
Well, the soloist of the quartet you can hear on this CD is
Hungarian and was born in 1988. His playing gives the
impression that he is capable of doing anything that has
ever been produced by anyone on the tenor-saxophone –
although his musical affiliation, so far, is obviously to
the world of early mainstream. In this context Gabor is
phenomenal – just like his partners who are a good 10-12
years older than him. As for the barely 16 year old
protagonist, one should add that his skills are
understandable and even proper if one considers only the
manual perfection of his technique but it is a mystery how
he had come to possess, in such a short time, such a sound,
such phrasing and such refinement that cannot be acquired by
simple learning… We can count ourselves lucky if once in a
hundred years we have such a stellar talent as Gabor Bolla.” |
